Energy saving products & green living
Header

Welcome to The Dirt On Green, EnergyEarth’s contribution to the blogosphere. We like to focus on educating our readers about energy efficiency products like LED light bulbs and low flow shower heads, but we also branch out into many other disciplines of green living. Occasionally we’ll share a green recipe or information about how to reduce, reuse and recycle! The fun part is that we continue to learn new things and hopefully, you will, too. If you like what you see here, click on Shop EnergyEarth.com in the top navigation bar to visit our ecommerce site where we feature an online home energy audit, an energy education section and tons of great energy saving products. Connect with us on Facebook and please, if you like what we write, share it! We really do appreciate it.

Sincerely,

The EnergyEarth Team

Local Recycling Center

1. Recycle your light bulbs! Incandescent bulbs, CFLs and LEDs alike can be recycled. Check with your local recycling service to see if you can drop them in your curbside bin. If not, try these options:

Incandescents: Next time you make a trip to IKEA, load up your inefficient bulbs. Most stores offer incandescent light bulb recycling.

CFLs: Pick up a Veolia RecyclePak or two and ship them off to a special recycling center designed to handle them safely. Easy!

LEDs: With an average rated life of 25,000 hours, you’ll be hard-pressed to even have LEDs to recycle. But if you do, check with your local hardware store to see if they’ll accept them.

2. Start a recycling club at your school! It could actually be tons of fun, help you meet new people and help the environment.

3. Make your own reusable shopping bags and keep them in your car or a couple in your purse so you’ll have them whenever you go shopping. You can even drop off old plastic shopping bags for recycling while you’re at the grocery store.

4. Grab a couple of bins and place them somewhere convenient, such as your kitchen or home office. Get a traditional blue bin, an old trash can, a paper bag or cardboard box – whatever best fits your style – and use them!

5. Keep old, dead batteries out of landfills with a Veolia Battery Recycling Pail. It holds up to 15lbs. and can handle any dry cell battery you can throw at it. Then, invest in some rechargeable batteries.

6. Donate old clothes, housewares, appliances and whatever you have around the house that you aren’t using anymore. You’ll give your old stuff new life and help someone in need.

7. Use food scraps instead of fertilizer on your lawn and garden with a compost bin. You’ll reduce waste and save money at the same time!

Rise Up Chattanooga Ladders

Rise Up Chattanooga was a public art project by Virginia-based artist Charlie Brouwer. We caught a look at it while it was still in progress, as shown in the photos. Over 450 ladders on loan from around the city were joined together with heavy-duty cable ties to form a temporary sculpture.

Ladders Up Close

Each ladder was said to represent “the hopes and dreams of its lender”. The standing structure was built to represent individuals of communities joining together to support each other and rise above adversity.

Ladders Entrance

Brouwer began his ‘Rise Up’ projects as a way to engage audiences in contemporary art as contributors. This is his 9th installation of this kind. Amazing and inspirational!

Water Pik EcoFlow 4 Mode Handheld Low Flow Showerhead

Water Pik’s EcoFlow Handheld Showerhead is a handy, water efficient showerhead ideal for a variety of uses. It uses just 1.5 gallons of water per minute and features four basic modes: a wider powerspray, a concentrated pulsating massage and a low flow version of each. The showerhead can also be set to a combination of the two!

Low Flow Showerhead Powerspray Mode

Powerspray mode

The 5’ long hose makes washing your dog or rinsing kids after a bath easy! Plus, you can quickly rinse the walls and bottom of the tub after cleaning.

Overall, the showerhead is very sturdily built and attractive. The chrome finish gives the shower a clean, polished look, while the alternating chrome and black rings on the hose are striking and unusual (in the best way!).

Low Flow Showerhead Pulsating Massage Mode

Pulsating massage mode

We immediately noticed a difference in our water bill after switching showerheads – nearly $15 for two adults and a dog. While you may notice a small difference in water flow from your old showerhead, the OptiFLOW technology makes the difference minimal. Not your style? No problem. We have plenty of low flow showerheads. No matter what model you choose, we’re confident you’ll love it.

Cherry Tree Branch

Allergy season is upon us. Whether or not it has hit your area yet, one thing is certain: it’s coming, and if you have allergies, it’s coming for you.

Soon, the dreaded yellow particles will be coating every available surface, making it impossible to avoid! Here are some great tips to help you get through allergy season without sneezing from dawn ‘til dusk.

Pollen on Car Roof

1. Take an antihistamine at least 30 minutes before going outside.

2. Minimize outdoor activity when pollen counts are high. Peak pollen times are usually between 10am and 4pm. You can even check out your area’s pollen count for the day and plan accordingly!

3. Keep windows closed and seal any air leaks you may have around windows or doors. You’ll keep pollen out and save on your utility bills!

4. Thoroughly clean you home – you’d be surprised how much pollen and dust can collect on surfaces in no time.

5. Wash bedding regularly.

6. Invest in an energy efficient air purifier to keep your home’s air clean and refreshing.

7. Take a shower before bed – you’ll sleep better without pollen on you!

8. Bathe your pets frequently and keep them off of furniture, if possible. Pollen can cling to your dog or cat’s fur and get tracked indoors.

Tissues and Box

We hope these tips help you and loved ones have a happy and healthy spring season, no matter the pollen count!
